SSD Data Recovery & Repair

We can recover data from many SSDs when they begin to fail.  Most laptops and desktops from around 2018 shipped with SSD drives and many people now also have external SSD drives to store and transport their data or make backups.

The way a modern SSD drives works is amazingly complex, and this unfortunately does make recovery much more complex and sometimes not possible. SSDs often suffer from degraded or failed NAND memory.  The NAND memory is where your data is stored and when it begins to fail you can begin to have errors when trying to read or write files.  SSDs often go from a minor issue to full failure in a very short period of time so its important to stop using the device as soon as you see an issue.  When the NAND fails completely there is often no path to data recovery due to locked firmware, complex algorithms and catastrophic memory cell degradation.  Here at TechRescue we have been recovering data from all types of media since 2004 saving many databases, dissertations, work projects, family photos and and documents on the way.

Common Symptoms Of Faulty Hard Drive

Common signs of a failing or failed drive are:

  • Errors when trying to read or write files
  • Drive no longer being detected
  • Drive being detected as 0GB
  • Drive being detected in device manager but not appearing as a drive letter
  • Unable to access files
  • Missing files or folders
  • Hard drive being reported as the wrong size
  • Windows saying you must format the drive (please don’t do this!)

Common Makes and Models

The list of common makes and models is always changing, but at the time of writing this the most common internal drives we see are NVMe drives of many different brands and models such as Samsung EVO 960, 970, 980 and 990, Crucial P3 and P5, WD Blue and Black drives and a variety of hundreds of other models.

Common external drives currently seen are Crucial X5, X7, X8, X9 and X10 drives and with the Pro versions of the X9 Pro and X10 Pro.   We also see Samsung T5, T7 and T9 drives.
