If you have just found yourself in the unfortunate situation of having a wet laptop there are a few things you can do to minimize the chances of your laptop being irrevocably damaged. The majority of liquid spills we see tend to be over the keyboard area and given that main working parts of the laptop live directly underneath there it’s important to prevent the liquid passing any further into the laptop if at all possible.

Firstly turn the laptop upside down with the screen open to form an upside down V shape, unplug the laptop and remove the battery. If the data on the laptop is important to you then at this point remove the hard drive if you know how or contact a repair shop such as ourselves. With the laptop upside down and open, find a dry warm place for it live for a few days. Airing cupboards are ideal.

Giving it a few days to dry out thoroughly is important and it’s a bad idea to try and switch it on while there is any liquid left inside. If after a few days you switch the laptop on and it starts to beep randomly then chances are the keyboard is faulty and will need to be replaced. If it doesn’t switch on at all or switched on for a moment and then off again, then chances are something internal has been damaged. If you have decided or haven’t managed to remove the hard drive to recover the data then at this point you will have to contact an IT professional in order to retrieve your data or, if possible, have the laptop repaired.
